Chronojump

ChronojumpChronojumpChronojump

[Extract of “Creation of a free computer science instrument for the measurement of temporary events from contact platforms named Chronojump, and its application in sport sciences” presented on Switzerland 06]

“Time is the most used measure to value sport results. Time measurements must be taken with reliability, accuracy and independence of the observer, specially when the evaluands are very short. For this reason, when sport science universities need measuring tools, they usually buy expensive –unaffordable for students- technological instruments whose source code is not accessible, forcing the users to trust the manufacturing company’s quality controls and preventing them from the desirable validation in all scientific scope. The aim of this project is to provide a free GPL licenced application, which not only is freely downloaded from the Internet, but also facilitates the access to the source code and schemes of all its versions, both in software and hardware. [...]
It is a tool already used by training and health professionals, and university teachers, which, moreover, is also accessible to students, who can build the instrument with their own hands, at a very low expense, without violating any ethical or legal norms, with a high educative value and direct application to their professional scope.”

Projets similaires : These systems have similar functionnalities: ErgoJump http://www.byomedic.com/?f=detalle_producto&id=1902 WinLaborat http://www.efdeportes.com/winlab/index.htm Axon Jump http://www.sobreentrenamiento.com/ShopCE/Producto.asp?idp=815 OptoJump http://www.optojump.fr/ SpeedLight with Vjmat http://spe.com.au/swiftsports/prod_details.php?ResetPager=1&productid=16 http://spe.com.au/swiftsports/accessories.php?type=&productid=16&mode=proacc

Spécificités : Cited systems have different functionalities, i tried to sort them from less to more powerful, but all are non-free and expensive.

Their software's are non-free neither their hardware's. New Chronojump hardware, Chronopic 2.0 is also created using free software Kicad.

Also we encourage users to make their own mat or platform:
http://www.gnome.org/projects/chronojump/construction_contact_platform.html

They are useful for being in university laboratories or big sport teams, but cannot arrive to the sport trainer, the school or the student.

Chronojump developers wrote some articles about Chronojump as a free sofware and free hardware project. They are published in different places, but collected in:
http://www.gnome.org/projects/chronojump/documents.html
See (“specific documents of Chronojump” and “Reference articles about the used instruments”)

Manufacturer's of ErgoJump and SpeedLight have started cooperation with Chronojump. Both understand the licensing of free software and free hardware. Byomedic will sell it's own contact platform with the new Chronopic 2.0 and Chronojump software, they also financed the materials to construct Chronopic 2.0. Swift sports is trying to integrate Chronojump to Vjmat.

In a near future we plan:
- Work on a system for automatic detection of position and angles of body joints using an infrarred leds and a conventional camera with a cheap infrarred plastic filtration.
Create a server for having universal data of timer tests.
This features are not present on cited programs.

Contributions souhaitées : 1.- Travel to universities; 2.- Code; 3.- Translations; 4.- Chronojump gift to sport university laboratories

1.- Travel to universities: As Chronojump is fully usable, we want to reach more audience, specially the new professionals, for this reason we would like to travel to universities to talk about Chronojump to teachers and students. We started travelling to present Chronojump to different Congresses:

-A Coruña (Spain), 2005: “Proyecto Chronojump: Sistema de Medida y Gestión de la Capacidad de Salto usando Software y Hardware Libres”
http://congreso.gpul.org/en/aceptados/

-Rio Claro (Brazil), march 2006: “Aplicações do software e hardware livre chronojump para a cronometragem de eventos esportivos temporais mediante a plataforma de contato”

-Vilanova (Spain): Guadec Jun 2006 “Chronojump: GNOME GPL'd software & hardware in sport short time events mesaurement”

-Portugal, oct 2006: Technological Event: ALANtejo “Proyecto Chronojump”

We presented also in Barcelona universities in Byomechanics classes.

2.- Code:

As we pointed above, we want to code a system for automatic detection of position and angles of body joints using an infrarred leds and a conventional camera with a cheap infrarred plastic filtration, and a server for having universal data of timer tests. We need help with this and also to help the different bugs and feature requests that are being posted in our bugzilla:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/browse.cgi?product=chronojump

3.- Translations.

Translations are important in any software project, and traditionally free software projects pay more attention on them.

Program is being translated ok, thanks to gnome-translators project for this task. As this translators are not kind on the topic, we written a glossary for them:
http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/chronojump/trunk/glossary/
Currently we have this translations:
Arabic, catalan, chinese (simplified), dzongkha, english (GB), finnish, french, occitan, portuguese (PT and BR), spanish, swedish and vietnamese

Website is translated by friends of us. Some of the translations are fully: catalan, english, spanish, gaelican, portuguese; And some of them are only partial: deutsch, french, italian

Chronojump Manual it's only in spanish and it should be in english at minimum:
http://www.gnome.org/projects/chronojump/documents.html

4.- Chronojump gift to sport university laboratories: We want to make a Chronojump-gift to all laboratories in sports universities. By giving them Chronojump and the Chronopic, they can use it in research and in education.
